"There are three matters which are the matters of Abarat: the matter of Love; the matter of War; and the matter of Time, yes? And so what happens in the fifth book is that all three of those things collide and Carrion’s own forces – in terms of the Carrion Birds, after which he’s named – manifest themselves.
